Son of Golf Legend Billy Casper to Host Summer Games Golf Tournament

Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games and Southern Utah University’s Community on the Go travel program are partnering again in 2019 for their second annual community golf tournament for all skill levels at Cedar Ridge Golf Course on Friday, June 14. And joining the event again this year is professional golfer Byron Casper of San Diego.

In 2018, there were 23 four-person teams vying for the gold medal after golf took a four-year hiatus from the annual summer games. Pace Clarke, director of the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games, said he was thrilled with the turnout at last year’s tournament and is excited to see Byron Casper, son of PGA Tour legend Billy Casper, return as host of the festivities. Casper will also be instructing a community golf clinic on Thursday, June 13.

“Golf was a real success last year,” Clarke said. “Having exclusive time with Byron Casper is a great opportunity for our golfers to improve their game.”

During the golf clinic, work on your swing or putt with Casper, who has been around golf all of his life. Casper said that his love of the game started early by going to summer golf camps and traveling to different events around the world with his father.

“I am very excited to be a part of golf coming back to the Utah Summer Games,” Casper said. “It’s good for families and friends, and it’s my pleasure to be part of this new initiative in Utah regarding having a golf tournament back at the annual summer games in Cedar City. I also feel the clinic was a huge success and enjoyed helping everyone there.”

Style of play for the 2019 Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games golf tournament will be a four-person scramble. The tournament is open to participants of all ages, however, participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Casper has published two books on golfing and is actively involved in The Billy Casper Youth Foundation, a children’s charity also known as “Billy’s Kids.” Billy Casper received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Southern Utah University in 2013.
